"A Real Father"

For many years a father was not recognized,
He never had a birthday party or a surprise.
He went out everyday and did very hard work,
You could tell because of the sweat in his shirt.

If I wanted to go to a party I would have to get permission,
My dad wanted me to come home in good condition.
He sent me to school to learn to read and write,
He wanted me to be very wise and bright.

He was always sure I had shoes on my feet,
And there was plenty of food on the table to eat.
He was very protective of me because I was a girl.
He said, 'There's a lot of trouble out in this world.'

He wanted me to have a very good job
by the time I was grown.
He said, 'You will need it when I am gone.'
At night we would kneel and pray,
We thanked God for another day.

Now that he is gone, I really do miss him.

He was a Real Father.

~ Johnny Carl Harrington ~

He worked and sweated for his wife and family of twelve.
He lived on a farm in Oklahoma where he raised his big family.
He planted sugar cane in the Spring and harvested it in the Fall.
He made enough molasses for the family to last until the next year.

He raised and tended cattle, hogs and chickens.
From the hogs he would strip the fat, and make lard and
washing soap for the laundry. He grew vegetables and fruits.
He worked year round, from sunup to sundown, for his family.
